All Chilean salmon meal suppliers ORIVO-certified

Chile has become the first country where all salmon meal producers are certified by the Norway-based ORIVO authenticity testing program.

ORIVO said in a statement that the addition of Pesquera la Portada has completed the share of certification to all the country’s salmon meal suppliers. Pesquera la Portada’s international sales manager Magdalena Errázuriz said that this is a sign that raw material producers in Chile are responding to changes in consumer demands around the globe.

ORIVO said that it has certified roughly 75 percent of all salmon meal producers globally. A trend over recent years among pet owners for more insight into the sources and ingredient list of pet food they are buying has driven this trend. The certification guarantees that the salmon meal they are buying is 100 percent authentic.

The program is also being used as a verification seal for omega-3 dietary supplements for human consumption, and ORIVO is working to expand the scope of its technology, especially for pet foods.

The certification is based on lab tests that allow ORIVO to verify fish species and the geographic origin of a sample. The certification program was supported by the Norwegian Research Council and Innovation Norway.

Norway and Chile are global leaders in the development of large-capacity production facilities designed to process offcuts from the salmon farming industry. ORIVO said that other large-scale facilities are scheduled to come online in Europe with a sole focus of supplying pet food, and which it says will help expand the program even further.
