Cooke Adding Jobs at Maine Salmon Processing Plant

Cooke Aquaculture of Blacks Harbor, New Brunswick, will add about 50 workers to its farmed salmon processing facility in Machiasport, Maine, according to a report in The Quoddy Times, a bimonthly newspaper.

The Maine facility, which was originally expected to open this month, began processing in November. Operating as True North Maine, the site has 53 employees, including management. The plant is running 40 to 50 hours weekly, processing about 20,000 pounds of salmon daily.

With additional workers, the plant will increase production to six days a week and operate year-round, says Nell Halse, director of communications for Cooke Aquaculture.

There are about 2.5 million fish in Cooke’s salmon cages in Maine waters, Halse adds.
