GOAL 2014: VASEP VP wins Lifetime Achievement award

Dr. Nguyen Huu Dzung (pictured), the vice president of the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), was given a lifetime achievement award at the Global Aquaculture Alliance’s (GAA) Global Outlook for Aquaculture Leadership (GOAL) conference on Wednesday in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Wally Stevens, executive director of the GAA, said Dr. Dzung is “the face of the Vietnam seafood industry.”

“No country, to my knowledge, has such a devoted ‘salesperson.’ He is a truly special man,” said Stevens. GAA President George Chamberlain lauded Dzung for his passion and “sincere, tireless” efforts to promote Vietnam seafood.

Dzung’s career in seafood spans more than four decades. He is best known for his work with VASEP, where he became general secretary of upon its establishment in 1998. Since then, Vietnam’s aquaculture industry has grown tremendously. Last year, the country exported USD 6.72 billion (EUR 5.31 billion) of seafood, with shrimp and pangasius sent to a total of 91 and 148 countries, respectively.

Aquaculture’s role in the diversification of Vietnam’s economy in just 30 years is a testament to the foresight and intuition of Dr. Dzung, said Stevens.

Prior to his position with VASEP, Dr. Dzung was deputy director of the Ministry of Fisheries’ Department for Science and Technology, where he worked from 1984 to 1998. He was also a senior lecturer at the National Fisheries University of Vietnam from 1971 to 1984. He has a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the National Fisheries University and a Ph.D. in mechanical sciences from the Lodz Technical University in Poland.
