NZ King Salmon ‘astonished’ by decision

New Zealand King Salmon is “dismayed” and “astonished” that the Marlborough District Council intends to oppose its application to the Environmental Protection Authority to set up more salmon farms in the Marlborough Sounds.

King Salmon chief executive Grant Rosewarne said yesterday that the “extraordinary” decision was “totally at odds with what the community has told us it wants.”

“It also represents a 180 degree turn in promised support by the MDC. I am told it was a close decision but even so we are astonished the council has taken a position against the application.”

He said findings of a new survey that showed nearly four times as many people in Marlborough supported the company’s plans as opposed them (53.6 percent for and 14.1 percent against) showed the council’s decision to oppose the application did not reflect local opinion. The survey was done through the Internet by Buzz Channel using 250 people.
