Pangasius farmers encouraged to unite

Thai Van Lai, deputy chairman of Dong Thap Seafood Association, is encouraging nine provincial seafood associations in the Mekong Delta to unite to better represent the interests of the region’s pangasius farmers.

The seafood associations and its members need to be more active in following international market trends, applying modern production technologies and strengthening the role of associations to attract investments.

The association would cover the entire pangasius supply chain, from seed to production to export. The eight provinces are Tien Giang, Ben Tre, Dong Thap, Vinh Long, An Giang, Hau Giang, Soc Trang, Tra Vinh and Can Tho.

In the first eight months of 2011, Mekong Delta farmers harvested nearly 700,000 metric tons of pangasius.
