Scottish salmon farm first in UK to get ASC certification

A Scottish salmon farm has become the first in the United Kingdom to earn certification from the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC).

Marine Harvest’s Loch Leven salmon farm in Lochaber has met the ASC’s standards in a number of areas including management of sea lice, environmental impact and community involvement.

Marine Harvest’s farms produced a total of more than 48,000 metric tons of salmon in Scotland in 2014. In a statement, the ASC said Marine Harvest has committed itself to achieving worldwide certification by 2020.

“We’ve always taken our responsibilities to the environment very seriously and this accreditation is recognition of this,” said Alan Sutherland, managing director of Marine Harvest Scotland. “This is just the beginning and we look forward to gaining similar recognition for our other salmon farms in a phased program in the coming years.”
