SOTA settles suit with former executive director

Salmon of the Americas (SOTA) announced Tuesday that it settled a wrongful termination lawsuit with former executive director Alex Trent.

Trent filed the suit in U.S. District Court in Miami last year, and a trial date was scheduled for May.

According to SOTA, its insurance provider reached a "five-figure" settlement with Trent over disputed consulting fees.

The remaining defendants paid nothing and the claims against them were dropped, said SOTA.

"Neither SOTA nor any of the companies and individuals involved believed there was any merit to the allegations, but agreed to settle this matter in order to avoid further unnecessary legal fees by our insurance carrier," said SOTA President Rafael Puga. "The amount of the settlement was far lower than the legal cost estimated by our attorneys to take this case to court."

SOTA represents farmed salmon companies in the United States, Canada and Chile.
