Swedish company to open oyster farm

Swedish company Ostrea Sverige AB on Thursday announced it is expanding its operations to include a commercial oyster farm.

The company’s first oyster harvest of European flat oysters (Ostrea edulis) is expected in 2013, with the aim of exporting oysters primarily to the French market, where demand for Swedish oysters is strong.

Oyster consumption in Sweden has also grown significantly, jumping almost 650 percent in the last five years, according to figures from Statistics Sweden.

“I am happy to be able to state that many of our shareholders have already subscribed for the new issue,” said Karl Johan Smedman, managing director of Ostrea. “There is a great deal of interest in Swedish oyster cultivation. It seems as if many people are realizing that this is a growth industry, not least because it is environmentally friendly and because there is increasing interest in locally grown food.”
