Trout innovation takes first Alltech inventor prize

Bosnia and Herzegovina fish farm Tropic Ribarstvo and its invention – a peracetic acid dispenser for rainbow trout farms – has won Alltech Coppens’ inaugural Inventor program.

The new solution offers farmers a safe, measured way to effectively make medical applications while also minimizing fish stress.

Tropic Ribarstvo received its prize, comprising EUR 2,000 (USD 2,183) worth of Alltech Coppens feed and the support of its innovation team to help develop the idea for the aquaculture industry, at the Aqua InDepth conference, taking place in Eindhoven, the Netherlands on 1 and 2 October.

“There was a wide range of exciting and diverse innovations, and the choice of selecting a winner was exceptionally difficult,” Alltech Coppens CEO Pat Charlton said. “Traditionally, the flow in the fish tank is stopped and the peracetic acid is manually applied to the water – this can cause additional stress on the fish and uneven distribution of the therapeutic. This invention is an extremely efficient method of treating fish in a way that ensures safe and stable dosing while minimizing stress to fish stock during the process.”

Alltech’s Inventor program was created with the aim of discovering and supporting some of the unique ideas developed by farmers, explained Charlton.
