Denmark-based feed manufacturer BioMar has launched a new product called BioRetain.
BioMar said aquafeed formulations have undergone “significant” change over the past 20 years, with advancements in nutritional knowledge, technology, and companies producing feed with varying raw materials necessitating change in the sector. BioMar has kept up with those changes by studying not only the raw materials to formulate feed but also animal efficiency with differing materials, according to the firm.
To that end, BioRetain underwent R&D processes for several years and now gives "greater flexibility in formulation," putting less emphasis on the specific raw material used.
“BioRetain represents an important step in how we develop feed solutions for the future,” BioMar Group CEO Carlos Diaz said. “Greater formulation flexibility strengthens our ability to respond to changes in raw material availability while continuing to deliver the biological performance and feed efficiency our customers expect.”
When used, BioRetain can be customized for specific biological needs and applied to different raw material feeds, giving the product flexibility for a number of species and production systems, BioMar said. Whether the objective is improving growth, cutting costs, or working with a smaller production system, the formula aims to be adaptable. Currently, BioRetain is being implemented on BioMar’s product portfolio, the company said, across different species, markets, and production processes, and the company said it has held up through multiple testing trials.
According to a video released by BioMar, BioRetain enhances protein synthesis – the biological process of cells building new protein – by causing an increase in protein accretion: the net gain of body or muscle protein when protein synthesis is higher than protein breakdown. This, according to the firm, lessens the transfer of feed into fat or waste and promotes higher growth retention.
“Growth is not simply about supplying more protein or more energy,” BioMar Global R&D Director Simon Wadsworth said. “What matters is how fish and shrimp retain and utilize those nutrients, turning more of every kilo of feed into performance and value for the farmer. With BioRetain, we provide balanced functional nutrition to improve nutrient retention, giving us a stronger foundation for biological performance while increasing the flexibility of our formulations.”
BioMar further explained the product creates the right combination of protein, energy, and micronutrients in a more efficient way than testing and adjusting raw materials themselves.
