TASA CEO Gonzalo de Romaña wins term as IFFO president

Gonzalo de Romaña, the CEO of Lima, Peru-based fishmeal and fish oil producer Tecnológica de Alimentos (TASA), has won election to serve as president of the IFFO Board of Directors.

Gonzalo de Romaña, the CEO of Lima, Peru-based fishmeal and fish oil producer Tecnológica de Alimentos (TASA), has won election to serve as president of the IFFO Board of Directors. His term began 1 January.

IFFO – The Marine Ingredients Organization is an international trade body representing the marine ingredients industry. Its previous president was Anne Mette Baek, the executive director of Marine Ingredients Denmark, who served a two-year term.

De Romaña has been a member of the IFFO Board of Directors since 2018. TASA is a major player in the Peruvian anchoveta fishery and its fishmeal and fish oil sector, which by far the world’s largest source of fishmeal and fish oil globally. Founded in 2002, the company describes itself as the largest producer and exporter of fishmeal and fish oil in the world and one of the main suppliers of refined and concentrated omega-3 fish oil. 

“I am delighted to carry on the work with IFFO – The Marine Ingredients Organization, engaging with the whole marine ingredients value chain, supporting our members while addressing important topics such as climate change, nutrition and responsible sourcing,” Gonzalo de Romaña said. “More than ever, I am convinced that marine ingredients hold the key to an improved food-production system, providing the most nutritious protein with a low carbon footprint.”

The newly elected vice president of the IFFO Board of Directors is Egil Magne Haugstad, the CEO of Bergen, Norway-based Pelagia AS. The company, which operates facilities in Norway, England, Scotland, and Ireland, specializes in pelagic seafood, omega-3 concentrates, and salmon byproducts.

“Having been an IFFO Board member for two years, I hope I can contribute to the development of IFFO being an organization supporting its members’ production of sustainable marine ingredients,” Haugstad said.

Newly elected members of the IFFO Board of Directors are Adriana Giudice, Walter Martinez, Nick Sterrett, Mohammed Shawkath Showry, Johannes Palsson, Andrè du Preez, and José Miguel Tirado. They will join Fernando Ribaudo, Felipe Zaldivar, Eduardo Goycoolea, Johann Peter Andersen, Odd Eliasen, and Andre du Preez for the board's next term.
