European charity the Postcode Lottery on Tuesday announced that it has launched a funding initiative to support the Marine Stewardship Council, among other seafood organizations.

The EUR 7 million (USD 9.4 million) Project Oceans fund was created to increase consumer awareness of the challenges the oceans face and support the work of organizations focused on protecting the oceans and promoting sustainable seafood.

The MSC will use the funds to increase outreach to tuna fisheries in the western and central Pacific, support its operations in China and increase the number of sustainable seafood promotions to improve public awareness.

“We are delighted to have received this support from the Postcode Lottery. Not only will the funding enable the acceleration of MSC activity in very critical areas, it will also give a significant boost to the growing levels of consumer awareness around the world,” said MSC CEO Rupert Howes. “It is wonderful to see such a high level of support focused on the world’s oceans and very encouraging to see so much activity highlighting the solutions that enable everyone to take part and make a very real difference.”

In addition, the Postcode Lottery Project Oceans has created a Web site,, where competitions and other activities are used to engage the public, generate interest in the oceans and explain how visitors to the site can make a difference. Project Oceans has also begun work on a TV documentary to be filmed by Mattias Klum.
