The Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA) has announced its Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certification program has certified more than 800 facilities, which the GAA is calling a “milestone.”
The program certifies processing plants, farms, hatcheries and feed mills as sustainable, based on a rigid set of qualifications. According to GAA, the program had certified 648 facilities as of 31 December 2013, and 701 facilities by 31 December 2014.
GAA also reports a growing number of companies with two-star, three-star and four-star BAP certifications. Right now, GAA estimates the annual output of BAP-certified processing plants worldwide to be more than 1.6 million metric tons (MT), up from more than 1.4 million MT recorded on 31 December 2014.
