GLOBALG.A.P. applies for GSSI accreditation

GLOBALG.A.P., a nonprofit group that operates a global aquaculture certification standard, has applied to be benchmarked by the Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI).

According to GlobalG.A.P., food safety is the main priority of the standard, with key criteria also identified for environmental measures, with animal welfare and worker welfare also given consideration.

The GSSI, launched in October 2015 with support from numerous companies involved in the global seafood trade, seeks to “provide clarity of seafood certification worldwide through a multi-component review that is based upon the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries and the FAO Guidelines for seafood certification and eco-labeling."

GlobalG.A.P. CEO Kristian Moeller said he supported the work of the GSSI and hoped for recognition from the group for his organization’s standard.

“Benchmarking platforms such as GSSI contribute largely towards increasing quality and consistency among certification programs,” Moeller said. “Both are needed to generate confidence in certification, which is one of our most important tools to maintain and increase trust in the agriculture, aquaculture and food sector.”
