Ocean Source Group joins NFI Crab Council

The NFI Crab Council welcomes Ocean Source Group as its newest member. Based in the British Virgin Islands with operations in Thailand, Ocean Source Group procures, packs and supplies blue-swimming crabmeat and other items for customers under its own label.

Ocean Source Group is the council’s second international member. It incorporates sustainable methods into its sourcing guidelines as an indicator of product quality.

Ocean Source’s addition came after the council wrote an open letter to domestic crab buyers , encouraging key buyers in the restaurant and retail sectors to question suppliers regarding their involvement in blue-swimming crab sustainability.

The NFI Crab Council funds fishery improvement efforts throughout the Philippines, Thailand, Sri Lanka and Vietnam. Council members commit to funding in-country sustainability work by assessing a fee on the poundage of crabs they import.

Brendan Sweeny, NFI Crab Council chairman, said the growing membership shows engagement in fishery improvement work.

“The Crab Council’s business-led approach to sustainability pivots on industry participation,” said Sweeny. “With Ocean Source Group pledging a commitment to strengthened crab stocks, the council increases its scope and impact. We need more companies from the crab community, like Ocean Source, to step forward and lend a hand.”
