Pevaeche tuna seiners Friend of the Sea certified

Pevaeche’s purse seiners have successfully undergone Friend of the Sea (FoS) renewal audit. The Pevaeche commercial group is composed of six vessels fishing in the Atlantic area and owned by Pevasa S.A Inpesca S.A. and Atuneros Vascos.

Yellowfin, skipjack and bigeye tuna from the seiners fleets operating in the Eastern Central (FAO Area 34) and South East Atlantic Ocean (FAO Area 47) are eligible to carry the Friend of the Sea eco-label. Vessels of the same group, fishing in the Indian Ocean have also formerly achieved certification.

All vessels are registered with International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas and take part in the observers program requested by FoS and currently also sponsored by the EU and entrusted to the Instituto Español de Oceanografía and AZTI (Spanish technology centre expert in marine and foodstuff research) and the Ocean Eye Company from Ivory Coast.

The fleet is also recognized by the Earth Island Institute as dolphin-safe.

Pevaeche has a responsible fishing policy aimed at minimizing the impact on immature fish and other associated species. Bycatch and discards are less than 5 percent of the total. Sharks and turtles, if caught, are mostly returned back to the sea alive.

“Pevaeche places sustainability at the core of its business,” said Guillermo Arrien, Pevaeche commercial manager.
