The Vilsund Blue East Jutland blue mussel fishery has earned Marine Stewardship Council certification.
This is the second fishery for the Danish company to bear the MSC eco-label. The company’s first certified fishery was the world’s first mussel fishery to receive MSC certification.
The dredge fishery operates in the southern Kattegat year round. Vilsund Blue self manages the fishery, voluntarily harvesting less than the quota. Last year, the company harvested 3,100 metric tons out of a 23,000 metric ton quota. The mussels are sold preserved, fresh or frozen, mostly to markets in mainland Europe.
At a national level, the fishery is managed by the Danish Commission of Commercial Fisheries.
The MSC certification carries two conditions: producing a research plan and continuing to provide information for adequate monitoring of the stock.
