Sysco, WWF form sustainability partnership

World Wildlife Fund announced on Thursday that it has partnered with Sysco to help it develop a sustainable seafood sourcing strategy.

WWF will assess the way Sysco's top 10 branded seafood species are sourced to ensure they originate from sustainable sources. Under its Sustainable Seafood Initiative, WWF will work with Sysco's fisheries to adopt more sustainable fishing practices and to encourage them to pursue Marine Stewardship Council sustainability certification.

In turn, the largest U.S. foodservice distributor will provide financial support to WWF's Shrimp and Salmon Aquaculture Dialogues. Dialogue participants are creating standards to minimize the environmental and social impacts associated with fish farming.

"Securing responsible fisheries and healthy marine ecosystems is only possible by working with the fishing and aquaculture industries along their entire seafood supply chain," said Bill Fox, VP and managing director of WWF's fisheries program. "We are excited to work with Sysco to identify tangible, ambitious strategies that will help lead the industry to more sustainable seafood sourcing practices."
