Alaska Symphony of Seafood entrants unveiled

Innovative new products in this year’s Alaska Symphony of Seafood competition range from candied salmon ice cream to salmon leather tote bags.

The Symphony of Seafood, now in its 24th year, seeks to promote value-added product created by the seafood industry in Alaska. First-place winners are given an opportunity to display their winning products at Seafood Expo North America (SENA) in Boston, Massachusetts, 19 to 21 March.

“In the 24th year of this annual competition, we are still seeing high-quality and innovative new products made out of Alaska seafood,” said Julie Decker, executive director of the Alaska Fisheries Development Foundation, which organizes the contest.

First-, second-, third-place and grand-prize winners will be awarded in three categories: retail, food service, Beyond the Plate and Beyond the Egg. People’s Choice awards will also be given out at Symphony of Seafood promotional events in Seattle and Juneau. The Seattle Open House and judging will take place 25 January, while the Juneau Legislative Reception and Awards Ceremony will occur on 22 February.

In addition to fierce competition in the retail and foodservice categories, “we also have some exciting new Beyond the Plate products made with chitosan, oil, and leather, as well as Beyond the Egg products made with pollock and salmon roe,” Decker said.

Retail entrants include: Alaska Smoked Sockeye Salmon and Alaska Salmon Bites from Authentic Alaska – Dear North, Sockeye Spinach Feta Salmon Burger from Odyssey, Sockeye Salmon Bisque from Bambinos Baby Food, Louis Kemp Hawaiian Poke Snackits from Trident Seafoods, Orca Bay's Jjamppong (Korean seafood noodle soup) from Orca Bay and SeaFare Pacific Salmon Chowder from Oregon Seafoods.

Foodservice entrants are: Canned Smoked Sockeye from Deckhand Seafoods, Sealegs Real Simple Surimi from Trident Seafoods, Orca Bay’s Albondigas (Mexican seafood soup) from Orca Bay, Seafood Cakes with Dungeness from Odyssey and Candied Salmon Ice Cream from Coppa.

The Beyond the Plate category includes three entrants: Salmon Leather Clutch from Tidal Vision; Alaska Naturals Alaska Salmon Pet Oil from Trident Seafoods; Crystal Clarity, a chitosan-based pool and spa clarifier from Tidal Vision; and Salmon Leather Tote Bag from Salmon Sisters.

Beyond the Egg entrants are Bruce Gore Coho Salmon Bottarga from Triad Fisheries and Kasu Alaska Pollock Roe from Trident Seafoods.
