Hake supplier lands deal with Costco

Oceanfresh Seafoods on Wednesday announced that it signed a deal with Costco Wholesale to supply the club store chain, North America’s largest, with premium hake loins marketed under the Kirkland Signature name, the retailer’s signature brand.

Oceanfresh, a majority of which is owned by Lonrho, said the hake loins will soon be available at Costco stores in the United States, followed by Canada and Mexico later this year. The Kirkland, Wash.-based company operates more than 600 stores in eight countries, the vast majority of which are located in North America.

Oceanfresh has been supplying hake fillets to Costco under its Oceanfresh brand, and the company said seen demand for the product has been growing.

“This contract reflects the increasing customer demand for a high quality, wild caught and sustainably sourced product and will be fulfilled through the supply chain infrastructure which we already have in place,” said Lonrhoe Executive Chairman David Lenigas in a statement to the London Stock Exchange.

Lonrho is listed on the London Stock Exchange and Johannesburg Stock Exchange. Founded in 2001, Oceanfresh is based in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Oceanfresh also landed a deal with Walmart, the world’s largest retailer, last July.
