Ivar’s takes top SOS honors

Ivar’s Seafood of Seattle on Friday won the 2010 Alaska Symphony of Seafood (SOS) grand prize, besting 13 other new Alaska seafood products submitted for the 17th annual new products competition.

Ivar’s Wild Alaskan Smoked Salmon Chowder took the competition’s top honors, and was also the People’s Choice winner at the New Products Contest Private Judging & Open House at the Palace Ballroom in downtown Seattle on 3 February.

"Ivar's Seafood, Soup and Sauce Co. was elated to receive the people's choice award during the Seattle event and we are privileged to learn of our victory as the grand prize winner in Anchorage. Receiving this honor has been on our to-do list for years now and it sure feels great having achieved this goal," said Chris Lewark, director of sales for Ivar's.

Crab Stuffed Salmon by Aqua Star of Seattle was the People’s Choice winner at the SOS Gala Soirée and New Products Contest Awards Ceremony on 19 February, held at the Dena’ina Civic and Convention Center in Anchorage, Alaska.

The SOS new products contest is broken down into three categories: foodservice, retail and smoked products. Ivar’s salmon chowder took first place in the smoked products category. Alaskan Amber Beer Battered Cod from Trident Seafoods of Seattle was selected as the top new foodservice product while Top Crusted Corn Tortilla Salmon from Aqua Star was selected as the top new retail product.

Established by the Alaska Fisheries Development Foundation, Alaska Symphony of Seafood inspires innovation and better use of Alaska’s marine resources and also encourages the development of new products featuring Alaska seafood.

Samples of this year’s winning entries will be available at International Boston Seafood Show booth No. 2223. Last year’s grand-prize winner was Trident Seafoods’ Sesame Teriyaki Keta Salmon.
