Jewel-Osco to Open 'Urban Fresh' in Chicago

Jewel-Osco will open a 16,000-square-foot store in Chicago's Lincoln Park community this fall. "Urban Fresh, by Jewel" is designed as a specialty grocery store catering to the unique shopping needs of busy urban consumers.

The small-format store will offer a variety of ready-to-go meal solutions, ranging from gourmet sandwiches to dinner entrées. The store will also carry produce and a selection of fresh meats and seafood.

"The smaller-format store is an exciting complement to our larger, more traditional grocery stores," Keith Nielsen, president of Jewel-Osco, told Health Business Week. "We hope to learn as much as possible from the effort, paying close attention to customer feedback, so we can deliver the best experience for our shoppers."

Jewel-Osco, a Supervalu company, operates 32 stores in Chicago.

The Lincoln Park store formerly housed Supervalu's Sunflower Market. The Eden Prairie, Minn.-based retailer closed all five Sunflower Market stores in Illinois, Indiana and Ohio in February after less than two years of operation because the organic foods concept wasn't meeting the company's expectations.
