Mexican chain promotes shrimp taco

Del Taco is giving away coupons for a free Crispy Shrimp Taco on its Facebook page as part of a limited-time offer.

The Lake Forest-Calif.-based chain, which operates 515 quick-service restaurants in 18 states, is featuring the menu item on the latest episode of the Del Taco Super Special Show on its Facebook page.

“The Crispy Shrimp Taco is one of our most popular promotions,” said John Cappasola, Del Taco’s VP of marketing for Del Taco. “We sold nearly [750,000] in the first few weeks.”

Available for USD 1.89, the Crispy Shrimp Taco features lime chili batter-dipped shrimp, shredded cabbage, secret sauce, salsa and a lime wedge. The meal deal costs USD 5.99 and includes two Crispy Shrimp Tacos, crinkle-cut fries and a beverage.

Also available on the Del Taco menu for a limited time are Shrimp & Fries and Fish & Fries. The meal deal includes 10 pieces of shrimp and fries or two pieces of fish and fries with a beverage for USD 4.99 each.

Seafood first appeared on the Del Taco menu in 2005 with the launch of the Crispy Fish Taco, which remains one of the chain’s most popular tacos.

Another Mexican chain, Taco Bell, the nation’s largest, is offering a Pacific Shrimp Taco for a limited time to coincide with the Lenten season. It’s available for USD 2.79 and is Taco Bell’s first seafood item since 1986 when it offered seafood salad. The menu item is being supported by a national TV advertising campaign.
