Road to Brussels: Can Spain win again?

Three Spanish companies are among the 43 finalists announced on Monday in the 2010 Seafood Prix d’Elite Awards at the upcoming European Seafood Exposition in Brussels, Belgium.

Representing Spain in the 10th annual new products competition are Procesados Pesqueros SL/Grupo Lumar of Galicia, Caladero of Zaragoza and Krustagroup S.A.U. of Huelva.

Two Procesados Pesqueros products were selected as finalists in the foodservice category: Filled Tuna Tender Loin Stuffed with Dates and Bacon and Tuna Supreme in Blue Cheese Sauce.

“It’s quite a thrilling prospect,” said Rodrigo Rodriguez, the company’s commercial director. “As a small, family-owned company, you can imagine that we are quite thrilled with these results. These are terrific recipes that we have developed over the last two years. They form part of our varied range of seafood sauce products and specialties.”

"Procesados Pesqueros’ product line is based on simplicity," said Rodriguez. "The products are healthy, natural (free of preservatives, food additives and artificial colorings) and practical and convenient (boneless and skinless fish tenderloins that take only minutes to cook)," he explained.

“We have been involved in the fishing industry for the last 50 years, and as fishermen before becoming processors, we are aware of the challenges facing our industry, the significance of responsible fishing and its impact on sustainability efforts,” said Rodriguez.

“For this reason we base our products on species and fishing practices we know first-hand,” he explained. “We either catch it ourselves or source it from affiliate boats we know well and trust. It’s all about sincere, realistic efforts to deal with sustainable sourcing, and not merely preaching to the choir. The end result is a product line that is consistent with natural, healthy food that consumers can enjoy at home or in their favorite restaurants.”

At last year’s Seafood Prix d’Elite, a Spanish company, Alfocan S.A. of Seville, won the best new foodservice product for its Crayfish Skewers. Germany’s Deutsche See GmbH captured the best new retail product for its Seasonal Fresh Fish Convenience-Salmon in a Wooden Leaf.

This year’s Seafood Prix d’Elite winners will be announced at an awards reception in Auditorium 2000 of the Brussels Exhibition Grounds on 27 April.
