Catering to Europe’s time-pressed consumers, Spain’s Marfrío frozen seafood producer and wholesaler is set to launch its new Cleaned Patagonian Squid at next month’s European Seafood Exposition.
Patagonia lies along the Pacific Ocean in both Argentina and Chile. Sourcing South American squid enables Marfrío to say: “We are out for further innovation every day, with the sole aim of introducing new products on the market, satisfying the demands of our clients.”
Patagonia squid (Loligo patagonica) is a high quality product caught by Marfrío’s boats in the Falkland Islands fishery (Southwest Atlantic, FAO Area 41). To seal in all its original properties and texture, the squid is already deep-freezing in the boat, retaining maximum freshness.
Cleaned Patagonian Squid was born from Marfrío’s philosophy of giving maximum assistance to the consumer with the product cleaned, packaged and ready for use in preparation for all types of dishes. It will also be presented in various formats to meet consumer needs and demands.
The company explained: “The product is presented with clean sheath and tentacles and packaged in bulk in a 1-kilogram tray and 1-kilogram bag; and 400-gram tray in the new format designed by Marfrío — the skinpack, an innovative packaging that allows the consumer to see the ingredients and fully appreciate its qualities.”
Marfrío was founded in the 1980s as a result of the expertise gathered among fisheries partners and shipowners in Marín, Pontevedra, in the Galicia region of northwest Spain. The firm started formal operations in 1985 as a trading company and celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2010.
Its spirit of achievement and dedication to continuous research ranks them among the strongest groups in the sector. Marfrío says it is noted for its steady growth, ready use of modern and advanced technologies, as well as its wide range of 62 successful catalogued products.
The company told SeafoodSource: “Thanks to the experience and confidence of our customers, Marfrío has a strong presence in international markets, exporting about 70 percent of our production. Between them, our markets are across western Europe such as Italy, France, Germany, United Kingdom, Denmark and Portugal.”
Describing markets beyond Europe, the company continued: “Outside our continent, Marfrío has presence in countries like South Africa, the United States, Japan and Turkey. We also have customers in countries such as Lithuania, Austria, Hungary, Morocco and Poland, among others.”
