Schedule set for Alaska Symphony of Seafood competition

The dates for the “Alaska Symphony of Seafood” events have been set, with Seattle kicking off its festivities on 10 February, to be followed by the Juneau Legislative Reception on 16 February and the Award Ceremony in Anchorage on 19 February.

The Alaska Fisheries Development Foundation (AFDF) – which hosts and organizes the event – is still accepting “Call for Product” applications for the 2016 competition; all forms and fees must be turned in by 8 January. Products that are entered into the competition are grouped into four categories: Retail, Foodservice, Beyond the Plate and, this year’s newest categorical addition, Beyond the Egg. Items entered into the latter category are those made with with roe or uni – including jarred ikura, herring roe‐on‐kelp, uni paste or other like-ingredients.

A panel of judges will evaluate all the products on 10 February. Products will be rated on the basis of packaging and presentation, overall eating/consumer experience, price and potential for commercial success. Prizes for first, second and third place will be awarded alongside grand prize winners and a People’s Choice distinction handed down for each promotional event.

First place products will have the opportunity to go on display at this year’s Seafood Expo North America / Seafood Processing North America event, to be held from 6-8 March.
