Supermarkets in the United States and Canada are increasing their grocery delivery options, in an effort to better compete with Amazon, Walmart, and other retailers.
Loblaw, the largest food retailer in Canada, is one such retailer set to broaden its grocery pick-up and delivery offerings. While home delivery services are available in 11 markets currently, Loblaw will expand the service to Montreal, Quebec; Halifax, Nova Scotia; Regina, Saskatchewan; and two additional markets this year, The Globe and Mail reported.
Loblaw will also expand its click-and-collect program – which allows customers to order groceries online and pick them up – to 500 new pick-up sites this year. By the end of 2018, Loblaw aims to have more than 700 pick-up locations that include its grocery stores as well as several Shoppers Drug Mart locations and Go Train stations in Ontario.
Meanwhile, Carlisle, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.-based Giant is expanding its Peapod online grocery service to customers of its stores in Reading, Birdsboro, and Temple, Pennsylvania.
Now, 109 of the more than 170 stores under Giant and Martin’s banners are within the geography of Peapod’s delivery range, Supermarket News reported.
“Through the service, Reading-area residents and businesses can go to Peapod.com or use the Peapod mobile app to shop for groceries — including fresh fruit and vegetables, seafood, meat and dairy, as well as national brand and Giant private label products — and have them delivered to their home or worksite,” Supermarket News said. “Also available for delivery via Peapod are a wide selection of meal solutions, such as ready-to-cook meal kits, chopped produce and rotisserie chickens.”
Phoenix, Arizona, U.S.A.-based Sprouts Farmers Market is expanding its grocery delivery service to Denver, Colorado; San Diego, California; and Sacramento, California.
Sprouts’ home delivery, which is offered via grocery delivery service Instacart, is also available in all of the grocery chain’s other major markets, including Texas, Utah, and Arizona.
Fresh seafood is just one of the more than 12,000 products are available via Sprouts’ delivery.
