U.S. restaurant chain rolling with lobster for new promotion

Captain D’s, which operates 532 fast casual seafood restaurants in the United States, said it is aiming to make lobster more affordable with the introduction of several new dishes.

The chain’s Lobster Feast limited time offering, which started on 25 September, includes: Lobster Bites, Lobster Rolls, Lobster Bisque, and a Creamy Lobster Scampi.

“Restaurants serving lobster normally conjure up ideas of white tablecloths, far-off locales, or steep prices. Well, not anymore – Captain D's has changed that,” the company said in a statement.

Captain D’s has featured  Lobster Bites, Lobster Bisque and Lobster Rolls in past years “and has found them to be quite successful,” Bob Kraut, chief marketing officer for Captain D’s, told SeafoodSource.

“Our guests love the affordable luxury of lobster items and have requested we bring them back,” Kraut said.

Prices on the lobster meals range from USD 2.99 (EUR 2.53) for six-piece Lobster Bites to USD 6.99 (EUR 5.91) for the Creamy Lobster Scampi.

While he declined to name specific suppliers, Kraut said the chain sources both U.S. and Canadian lobster meat “from vendors that we believe are best-in-class, as we have done business with them for a few years.”’

North Atlantic lobster pricing is “relatively stable” this year compared to last year, Kraut said.

Captain D’s began planning for the promotion around six months ago, with the help of Janet Duckham, the chain’s chief supply officer, and the chain’s lobster vendors, according to Kraut.
