Walmart to enhance fresh food operations with hundreds of new managers

With an eye toward enhancing its fresh offerings and operations, major retailer Walmart is looking to create hundreds of new fresh food management roles to occupy its U.S.-based locations.

Around 30 of the new positions have already been filled, with hundreds more to come over the next three years as part of an improvement program, according to the latest reports detailing a supplier meeting held last week in Indianapolis between Walmart and its supplier partners. The managers will oversee fresh food operations in about 10 stores each, according to Reuters.

“We’re in the process of hiring fresh managers to help ensure quality and consistency in our fresh operations. This program aligns with our overall commitment to improve the customer shopping experience and is an extension of our investment in associates and stores. We believe it’s the right investment for our customers and look forward to expanding the program, but do not have additional details about expansion or future markets at this time,” Walmart representatives told SeafoodSource.

The managers will be responsible for training employees who handle fresh food products like seafood. They’ll also be encouraged to take further steps to better fresh food sales and supply within the 4,600 Walmart stores across the United States.
