Whole Foods expands tuna promotion

Whole Foods this month is expanding its promotion and distribution of West Coast albacore tuna.

The nation’s largest natural-foods retailer is partnering with the Western Fishboat Owners Association (WFOA) for the fourth consecutive year to promote Marine Stewardship Council-certified troll-caught albacore.

On Saturdays from 13 August to 10 September, there will be whole albacore “truck sales” with a team of expert cutters to fillet and wrap customers’ albacore at select Portland, Ore., Seattle and British Columbia stores. There will also be price promotions, tastings, fishermen visits and cooking demonstrations.

“Whole Foods Market is a huge supporter of West Coast albacore and albacore fishermen; they’re always looking for ways to increase interest in local seafood,” said Wayne Heikkila, WFOA executive director. “These events are a great way to get people to try and buy local albacore and to teach them about the health, economic and environmental benefits of buying local.”

Wild Pacific Albacore is available at all U.S. Northwest and British Columbia Whole Foods stores from August through October, and whole fish sells for USD 3.99 to USD 4.99 per pound.
