Aller Aqua introduces RAS salmon feed

Christiansfeld, Denmark-based fish feed producer Aller Aqua has begun marketing a new aquafeed designed specifically for Atlantic salmon raised in recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS).

The product, Aller Flow, was introduced “following the increasing trend of large-scale production of Atlantic salmon in RAS across the world,” according to the company.

“Production of Atlantic salmon in RAS is gaining popularity across the globe with steadily rising production volumes each year. While technically advanced and requiring large investments, RAS also call for highly sophisticated and advanced fish feeds,” it said in a press release. “The feed is optimized for performance in terms of excellent water quality and healthy fast-growing fish.”

Aller Flow is the latest addition to the company’s PowerRAS line of products, all specifically designed for RAS-raised fish. The PowerRAS line is designed to maximize nutrient digestibility, palatability, and protein transfer to the fish, minimize stability, disintegration, and leaching in water, and ensure easy and complete fecal filtering. The new Aller Flow feed was developed and tested at Aller Aqua’s research facility in Buesum, Germany, according to Aller Aqua Product Manager Robert Tillner.

“We were able to improve the [feed conversation ratio] by no less than 4 percent in Atlantic salmon fed Aller Flow compared to a competing RAS feed,” he said. “That is a huge difference when producing several thousand tons of salmon! We have also significantly improved the feces structure from fish fed Aller Flow compared to a competing RAS feed, meaning that the more compact and stable feces are efficiently transported through and removed from the system by filtration units. This will make a big difference for the efficiency of the RAS as well as the economic result.”

Aller Flow contains no animal byproducts and is available in three- and 4.5-millimeter sizes, according to the company.
