Hong Kong-based alternative proteins producer OmniFoods has announced a distribution deal with a leading U.K. pub chain.
OmniFoods, part of the Green Monday group, will supply its plant-based Omni Golden Fillet at 480 pubs owned by the Greene King group across Britain.
“Additional stores will be added in mid-October,” OmniFoods said in a statement.
The company is positioning its offering as helping to ease an affordability and sustainability crisis facing the British fish-and-chips sector, which is populated mostly by small, independent players.
“The launch of this vegan fish and chips alternative is timelier than ever,” it said. The company’s Golden Fillet has an “ineffable ocean flavor [that encourages consumers] to take a step towards protecting our oceans.”
Over the summer, OmniFoods gave out free samples at several venues in London, U.K. The company also has distribution deals with McDonald’s branches in China for its OmniPork range and sells a crab cake product through Hong Kong branches of Starbucks. It also produces OmiSalmon and OmniTuna products and sells its retail products at Whole Foods Market and online via Ocado. Its CNY 100 million (USD 15 million, EUR 14 million) manufacturing facility is located in the southern Chinese region of Guangdong.
David Yeung, the CEO of the Hong Kong-based Green Monday Group, which operates OmniFoods, told SeafoodSource his company’s products are now sold in more than 20 markets.
