Bremnes Seashore plans new processing plant to meet rising demand for value-added salmon

Bømlo, Norway-based farmed salmon supplier Bremnes Seashore AS is planning to build a new cold storage and processing facility at its factory site at Kvednavikjo.

In a statement, the company, which also owns the brands SALMA and BÖMLO, said that the 14,000-square meter expansion will enable it to increase its production considerably while utilizing state-of-the-art sustainable production methods and energy-efficient systems.

The board expects the project to be completed by the end of 2023 on a budget of over NOK 400 million (USD 48.1 million, EUR 40 million).

It said that the local processing of salmon leads to a better utilization of raw materials and reduces the transportation weight of the products, and also that with the new factory, Bremnes Seashore will process a larger part of its salmon production while at the same time developing new processed products using more of the fish.

“Consumers want more processed products, and we intend to supply this. The new factory will allow us to process significantly larger volumes than today while increasing the range of products. Consumers worldwide can soon look forward to more high-quality salmon products from Bremnes Seashore, Salmon Brands, and Sjór,” Bremnes CEO Einar Eide said.

Geir Ivar Ådnanes, the company’s factory manager, said the facility in Kvednavikjo has been a working laboratory for quality enhancement and product innovation since 1992, and that this has been the basis for its brands.

“With this expansion, we will take further steps in our R&D work. We will also provide an even better workplace for our employees,” he said.

According to the statement, the the new cold storage center will be constructed first, and then work will proceed with the processing facility. The existing factory will remain in full production during construction. In addition to creating additional value and jobs, it is anticipated that the expansion will provide work to local and regional suppliers.

Bremnes Seashore, which operates 23 fish farms and three hatcheries in the Norwegian regions of Hardanger, Sunnhordland, and Rogaland and sported sales of NOK 2.8 billion (USD 302.9 million, EUR 256.2 million) in 2019, joined the Salmon Group network of family-owned fish farming and aquaculture companies in October 2020, after dissolving the Ocean Quality joint venture with Grieg Seafood in May 2020.
