India: December 2019 sourcing update

Indian producers have claimed that 2019’s production output is significantly down on 2018 due to factors such as diseases, heavy rainfall, and other production challenges.

Yet export statistics, reports from buyers, and data from Indian customs paint a different picture. In September alone, Indian shrimp exporters were up 1 percent compared to the same period in 2018. The winter crop has been harvested from mid-October onwards and has been in full swing from the end of November.

With mixed reports on India’s output, it remains uncertain what the real situation is.
