OBI, Trident land multimillion-dollar salmon contracts

OBI Seafoods and Trident Seafoods are the beneficiaries of new U.S. government contracts for wild salmon valued at more than USD 30 million (EUR 25 million).

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is buying nearly USD 29 million (EUR 24.5 million) worth of canned pink salmon and around USD 1.9 million (EUR 1.6 million) of frozen wild salmon fillets for child nutrition and other domestic assistance programs for fiscal year 2021.

Seattle, Washington, U.S.A.-based Trident will supply USD 15.3 million (EUR 13 million) worth of canned pink salmon, while Seattle-based OBI Seafoods was awarded a contract for USD 13.8 million (EUR 11.7 million) of canned pink salmon.

The suppliers will make deliveries between September 2021 and February 2022.

Trident was also awarded a contract for 180,000 pounds of frozen salmon fillets valued at USD 1.9 million.

In May, the USDA announced its biggest seafood purchase in history of USD 70.9 million (EUR 60 million).

The purchases are part of the department’s Section 32 program, which buys surplus goods for nutritional programs. Federal lawmakers in seafood producing states worked to increase funding for the program in several COVID-19 relief bills to provide an additional market for fishermen who saw their businesses struggle to sell products during the pandemic.
