COVID restrictions leads Scotland's first-ever shrimp farm to close

Great British Prawns Ltd. has entered into administration as a result of the closure of Scotland’s hospitality sector during COVID-19 lockdown restrictions.

According to local media reports, 18 jobs have been lost in the closure.

The Balfron, Scotland-based company was producing vannamei shrimp in a land-based clearwater recirculation aquaculture system (RAS), and supplying the restaurant trade with fresh products.

With its first harvest in 2019, Great British Prawns became Scotland’s first and only vannamei producer. But the business experienced a sharp decline in demand during the pandemic. Despite offering a household delivery service in July last year, it was unable to stay solvent.

Chartered accountants Johnston Carmichael has been appointed as administrator.
