Trident, Channel Fish awarded USD 2.1 million Alaska pollock contract

The U.S. government continued this year’s buying spree of Alaska pollock, awarding two major seafood processors a contract for around USD 2.1 million (EUR 1.8 million) worth of Alaska pollock nuggets.

Braintree, Massachusetts-based Channel Fish Processing garnered the majority of the contract at nearly USD 2.04 million (EUR 1.7 million) worth of the frozen nuggets, while Seattle, Washington-based Trident Seafoods will be supplying USD 82,570 (EUR 70,800) worth of the fish.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture said in the award notice that 266,000 pounds of nuggets were not purchased due to funding allocation issues.

This brings USDA's purchases of Alaska pollock for fiscal year 2020 to more than 12.5 million pounds, worth nearly USD 26.4 million (EUR 22.6 million), according to Genuine Alaska Pollock Producers.

“Fiscal year 2020 will likely end up the third-highest purchase year by USDA on both a volume and value basis, only behind fiscal year 2019 and fiscal year 2017,” GAPP CEO Craig Morris told SeafoodSource.

Earlier this summer, the USDA also awarded contracts for 798,000 pounds of frozen Alaska pollock nuggets, worth around USD 1.6 million (EUR 1.4 million), to Trident and Channel Fish. Trident was awarded USD 1.2 million (EUR 1 million) worth of the contract, while Channel Fish was awarded nearly USD 387,000 (EUR 327,000) worth.

In August, Trident also won a contract to supply the USDA with 1.5 million pounds of frozen bulk pollock for USD 2.27 million (EUR 1.92 million).
