Cepac develops award-winning Chiller Pack design with supplier Scottish Shellfish in mind

United Kingdom-based company Cepac has achieved registered status for its Chiller Pack – a corrugated cardboard composition packaging designed for the transport of fresh fish and shellfish.

Developed with supplier Scottish Shellfish in mind, the Chiller Pack was formally registered with the Intellectual Property Office in May, Cepac announced in a 22 June press release.

The Chiller Pack was created by a specialist transit packaging team at Cepac’s Rawcliffe site to allow for the “dry transportation of fish and shellfish” that wouldn’t result in the fresh seafood products having to sit in water.

“To keep seafood fresh, the Chiller Pack uses a unique corrugated cardboard design in combination with waterproof liner technology, which enables excess water to drain away from the product, leaving only fresh ice within the fresh food package,” Cepac said.

Sustainability was a primary focus for Cepac, which is an independent producer of corrugated boxes in the U.K. The company noted that sustainability has become “a theme which is pertinent across the entire aquaculture industry.” That theme is considered throughout the Chiller Pack’s design, Cepac said.

“The pack is made of recyclable materials, whilst also reducing the need for secondary plastic outer packaging or wrapping,” the firm explained.

“The Chiller Pack is a great example of how we work closely with industry to create novel solutions that support specific requirements – such as transporting fresh seafood. Using a unique design, we have created a new product for this important sector, offering the customer a highly sustainable pack with excellent product protection in the supply chain,” Cepac Rawcliffe Sales and Commercial Manager Nigel Hobson added.

For the 2019 U.K. Packaging Awards, the Chiller Pack design won gold in the Best New Concept category. Currently, the product is shortlisted for the Innovation Prize at this year’s AquaCulture Awards, which are scheduled for September.

Scottish Shellfish supplies mussels and oysters to restaurants, retailers, and wholesalers across the U.K.
