Need for highly customized solutions driving Danish seafood processing innovators

Taking place from 9 to 11 October in Aalborg, Denmark, this year’s DanFish International event will highlight the growing prominence of customized solutions in the international fisheries and seafood processing sectors.

According to the Danish Export Association, Danish seafood companies and processors have been taking a proactive approach to emerging customization needs, collaborating closely with their customers and other industry partners to pursue and innovate the necessary products. Martin Winkel, the head of Danish Export – Fish Tech, which organizes the Pavilion of Denmark at DanFish International, said stakeholders and buyers who attend the event this month will see Danish suppliers of customized solutions to fisheries and seafood processing at the very forefront during DanFish.

Among the companies set to exhibit at DanFish is NTF-Aalborg, which produces stainless solutions made by wire and round steel.

“We produce all from single units to several 1,000 pieces of a particular item. It depends on our customers’ needs. The customers invest in optimal use of their production equipment, which makes the design of the product a priority over price,” explained Jørgen Ravn, the key account director and co-owner of NTF-Aalborg.

Ravn noted the overarching community aspects that Danish suppliers and processing solution developers have when approaching innovation.

“This applies both to the cooperation with the customers, but also across the industry. If an individual supplier cannot provide the full solution, Danish suppliers to the fisheries and related processing industry are proactive in joining competencies in order to meet the customers’ challenges,” Ravn said.

“My Swedish industry colleague tells us that it is difficult to compete with Danish companies because we collaborate in so many ways within the industry. It makes it challenging to others to be on track with Danish suppliers when we help each other with the right solutions and support each other through export networks,” Ravn added.

IRON Pump A/S, another Danish company developing fisheries equipment including water pumps and Ellehammer ejectors for fishing and marine applications, approaches innovation similarly to NFT – with a focus on individual customer needs.

“Our ejectors and pumps are customized to fit our customers’ specific needs and applications. I.e. for the fishing industry, we took on the task and developed a new stainless-steel ejector for a specific customer as part of a solution that optimizes the use of raw materials onboard,” said Kenneth Jensen, a product specialist at IRON Pump A/S.

NTF-Aalborg and IRON Pump A/S are two or more than 90 companies comprising the joint Pavilion of Denmark at DanFish International.

"DanFish is one of the world's most important exhibitions for equipment to the global fishing industry and a unique opportunity to learn more about Danish competencies,” said Danish Export’s Winkel.

Danish Export - Fish Tech is the largest Danish network of suppliers to the global fisheries, aquaculture, and fish processing industries. Close to 100 companies are members of the network, which is part of Danish Export Association.
