Japan seafood exports increase in 2010

Japanese exports of farm, forestry and marine products in 2010 rose for the first time in three years, climbing 10.5 percent from a year earlier to JPY 492.1 billion, the farm ministry said Thursday.

While exports of beef fell 9.9 percent to around JPY 3.4 billion, exports of seafood products rose 13.1 percent to about JPY 286.5 billion. The ministry pointed to strong sales of salmon and trout.

Hong Kong was the largest importer with JPY 121 billion worth of products, up 22.1 percent, followed by Taiwan at JPY 60.9 billion and China at JPY 55.5 billion. Exports to Australia declined to JPY 5.3 billion and exports to the United States declined to JPY 68.6 billion.
