King crab-buying tool unveiled

Thanks to a new online tool developed by Northport Fisheries of Snohomish, Wash., when the Alaska King crab fishery opens this month, distributors and retailers will be able to place and track orders around the clock.

Northport, UniSea’s marketing partner for the Royal Aleutian brand of fresh king crab, announced the program’s launch on Monday. The online tool allows orders to be shipped directly from Anchorage, Alaska, to customers in the Lower 48 via FedEx, eliminating the need for orders to wait on trucks for final deliveries.

The tool allows for large purchase orders to be placed quickly and is designed to be user-friendly for large distributors who have multiple clients and are placing multiple orders concurrently, according to Northport. At the same time, the tool allows smaller customers to place lower-volume orders cost-effectively.

Customers can place multi-destination orders weekly, maintaining their own private list of clients and quantities, and orders can be adjusted any time until the shipping cutoff. The system sends an automatic response about the pending orders. After the cutoff time, Northport confirms product status and provides FedEx tracking numbers.

Northport said it is marketing its new program “aggressively” and expects to see its fresh king crab sales double or triple in the next few years.
