IFFO RS hits milestone for certification of fishmeal and fish oil production facilities

Almost 45 percent of the global output of fishmeal and fish oil will be certified as responsibly sourced, according to IFFO RS Ltd., the marine ingredients certification organization.

A total of 118 factories in 16 countries have received recognition under the group’s RS Certification Program, which verifies responsible sourcing and production of marine ingredients. Fisheries covered by the IFFO RS certification include anchovy from Peru, pollock from Alaska, sprat in Denmark and Norway, boarfish in the U.K. and Faroe Islands, menhaden from the Gulf of Mexico, and many others, the group said.

In 2017, IFFO RS Ltd. plans a major update of the standard with the goal of creating a comprehensive plan and strategy that will take it through 2025, according to a press release. The revised standard will be released for a 60-day public review in January 2017 and the IFFO is welcoming public comment, including from industry representatives and NGOs, on its website.

The grouphopes to introduce the new standard by June or July 2017, it said.
