Oyster-Eating Championship Returns

The Acme Oyster House, in New Orleans, yesterday announced the Acme World Oyster-Eating Championship will return after a two-year hiatus.

The event will take place Saturday during the French Quarter Festival.

Contestants in the 8-minute all-you-can-eat contest include Chicago chef Pat "Deep Dish" Bertoletti, ranked second in the world; Crazy Legs Conti, winner of the championship in 2002; Julie Lee of Baltimore, ranked 10th; Gravy Brown of Chicago, ranked 15th; Chip Simpson of Alabama, ranked sixth; and Baton Rouge's Damon Serignet, Louisiana's top eater.

The world record for oyster eating is 46 dozen in 10 minutes, set at the 2005 Acme Worlds by Sonya "The Black Widow" Thomas.

Acme Oyster House has three locations in and around New Orleans and one location in San Destin, Fla.
