Two new rays of hope have emerged at the threatened Cromer Crab Company, but workers have been told that one possible option to save about half their jobs does not stack up economically.
Bosses briefed staff representatives this afternoon on latest developments at the Holt Road factory, where 230 jobs are in the balance and a 90-day consultation is under way on the future of the troubled shellfish-processing business.
Workers heard that active discussions were in progress with a potential buyer who had visited the factory. The unidentified firm is understood to have instructed architects to undertake work to see what would be needed to make the site meet its needs.
Factory owners Young’s Seafood believe the approach is genuine and will be following it up next week to gauge the level of interest.
Young’s is also reported to be having a final look at some “potential new business” which could “significantly change the economics of the site” and hopes to have definite news on the subject next week.
