Seattle, Chicago among top 10 “salmon cities”

Chicken of the Sea has named its top 10 "salmon cities" in honor of National Salmon Day, which took place on Saturday, 8 October.

Chicken of the Sea, based in San Diego and El Segundo, California, U.S.A., produces pouches, cans and cups of salmon and other seafood.

Its top "salmon cities" rankings were formualted through the company's research on which cities' residents eat more fresh and shelf-stable salmon per person than their counterparts in other U.S. cities, and which have the potential to eat more salmon, or are more likely to try new salmon products, prepare salmon recipes or serve salmon as a meal.

According to Chicken of the Sea, those top 10 cities include: Seattle, Anchorage, Chicago, Cincinnati, Columbia, Baltimore, Nashville, New York City, San Diego and Washington, D.C.

“Despite their reputation as meat eating-capitals, several of the cities on our list qualify as sophisticated salmon markets and home to an increasing number of seafood and salmon lovers,” said Maureen McDonnell, director of brand marketing and category management for Chicken of the Sea. “We’d like to think that traditional protein lovers in these cities are more likely to occasionally switch out their top sirloin or prime rib for a hearty salmon recipe.”

While tuna, shrimp, lobster and crab have their own holiday in the U.S., salmon did not have a dedicated day until last year. Chicken of the Sea was instrumental in helping to create National Salmon Day to make Americans more aware of the significant health and wellness advantages of including fish in their diet.

“Now, more than ever, Americans need a high-protein, high-omega-3 food that offers such universal taste and recipe-development appeal, the public doesn’t recognize it as a healthy option,” McDonnell said last year. “National Salmon Day was created by Chicken of the Sea as an annual reminder of the essential nutritional benefits that packaged and wild salmon brings to the table.”
