Thai Union rep: Asia pet food sales a driver of tuna canning

Rising pet ownership in Asia is driving demand for tuna, according to Thai Union, one of the world’s leading tuna canners.

The firm’s canning plant near Bangkok, Thailand, is producing canned and packed cat food for multinational Nestle, which has been rolling out cat-food in markets like China. Other customers include CJ Foods, part of the giant CJ Korean conglomerate.

While cat food sales are thriving, canned tuna sales have been tepid in China, according to Nakorn Niruttinanon, general manager for commercial activities at Thai Union in Bangkok. Thai Union sells in China under its 21st Century canned tuna brand, but has more recently also focused on sales of high-end imported seafood in a tie-up with online retailer Alibaba.
