Misleading statistics – like seafood fraud cases down 75 percent since 2008 – may have the public believing fraud is less prevalent, which isn’t the case. Fraud isn’t happening less but is instead being reported less frequently to NOAA. Wright spoke to Andrew Cohen, a former agent in charge at NOAA’s Fisheries Office of Law Enforcement, who said fraud has become increasingly pervasive and systematic, as well as tolerated since it keeps prices lower than they would be otherwise. However, huge obstacles exist that prevent changes regarding fraud. Currently, it’s becoming an increasingly good time for the bad guys, Cohen said.
