Slave labor on fishing boats in Indonesia was put on blast by the Associated Press this March in an expose titled “Are slaves catching the fish you buy?” As it turns out, consumers shopping for seafood products in places like Walmart, Kroger and Safeway – or eating at restaurants that receive seafood from Sysco – were very well purchasing items sourced from one of these vessels. Even Thai Union Frozen Products (TUF) was found to feature seafood that had been sourced from fishing communities where workers were oppressed in a variety of ways – some laborers are even kept as prisoners if they are considered a flight risk.
