Lent has facilitated a rise in special seafood menu offerings over the years. Even fast food giant McDonald’s adopted a Lent capitalization strategy by offering its Filet-O-Fish sandwich with an Old Bay tartar sauce in 700 storefronts across Maryland, Virginia, Delaware and Washington in 2015. As Terri Hickey, manager of McDonald’s U.S. media relations, told SeafoodSource, the sauce offers a little something extra: It “adds a bit of local flavor to this longtime customer favorite,” said Hickey.
