Tuna catches up after fisheries agreement inked

Catches of yellowfin tuna in waters off northeastern Taiwan have increased 20 percent this month compared with the same period last year following the signing of a fisheries agreement with Japan, local fishermen said yesterday.

Yellowfin tuna is the main fish caught in waters near the disputed Diaoyutai Islands

Taiwanese fishermen from the Suao area in Yilan County caught about 19,800 yellowfin tuna near the Diaoyutais and waters off Hualien and Taitung last year.
